Stop Paying! How to Easily Delete and Exclude Pages from Any PDF for Free
If you’ve ever needed to quickly snip a few unwanted pages out of a large PDF document, you know the frustration. Tools like Adobe Reader won’t let you edit the file, and upgrading to the full Adobe Acrobat software is far too expensive just for a simple task.
In this tutorial from Darren’s Tech Tutorials, we’re going to completely bypass those limitations using an incredible piece of freeware called PDF Edit. This software is fast, powerful, and best of all, completely free to download and use.
Forget the common workarounds, like printing a PDF to a new PDF and only selecting certain pages—that often dramatically increases your file size! We’ll show you the proper way to delete pages without inflating your document size.
Let’s dive into the step-by-step process!
Why You Need a Dedicated Tool
When dealing with PDF files, most people hit a wall when they need to make edits. While you might be tempted to use online converters or the “print to PDF” method, these often degrade quality or, as mentioned, balloon the file size unnecessarily.
PDF Edit solves this by providing true editing capabilities in a compact, free package. Here is exactly how to get it, install it, and use it to clean up your documents.
Step 1: Download the Free PDF Edit Software
To begin, we need to download the freeware. We’ll be using the official open-source repository.
-
Visit the Download Link: Navigate to the official SourceForge page for PDF Edit. (We’ve included the exact link below for your convenience.)
Download Link:
https://sourceforge.net/projects/pdfedit/ -
Click Download: Once on the page, look for and click the main “Download” button. The download should begin automatically within a few seconds.
-
Save the File: Choose a location to save the installer file (usually your ‘Downloads’ folder) and confirm the download.
Step 2: Install PDF Edit
Once the installer file is saved to your computer, installation is quick and straightforward.
- Run the Installer: Locate the downloaded file and double-click to launch the installer. You may be prompted to confirm that you want the program to run—click OK or Run.
- Follow Prompts: Click Next through the setup wizard. We recommend leaving the default installation location (usually the C Drive) unless you have a specific reason to change it.
- Complete Installation: Click Install and wait for the installation process to finish. Once complete, click Finish.
PDF Edit is now installed and ready to use!
Step 3: Open Your PDF Document
Now it’s time to bring in the file you want to edit.
- Launch PDF Edit: Open the PDF Edit application (you can typically find it in your Start Menu or by navigating to the installation folder).
- Open the File: In the application window, go to File in the top menu bar.
- Select Open: Choose Open from the dropdown menu.
- Locate Document: Browse your computer to find the PDF document you wish to modify, select it, and click Open. Your PDF pages will now load into the workspace.
Step 4: Delete/Exclude the Unwanted Pages
This is the core of the operation. PDF Edit makes removing pages incredibly simple.
- Navigate to Pages: Go to the File menu again.
- Select Delete Page: Hover over or click the Pages option, and then select Delete Page from the submenu.
- Enter Page Number: A dialog box will appear asking you which page you want to delete. Enter the page number (e.g.,
1) and confirm. - Repeat: If you have multiple pages to delete (for example, page 4), repeat this process: File > Pages > Delete Page, and enter the next page number you wish to exclude.
Once you delete a page, the remaining pages automatically renumber, keeping your document sequential.
Step 5: Save Your New, Smaller PDF
After you’ve removed all the unnecessary pages, you must save your work.
Crucial Tip: We recommend saving the modified document as a new file. This ensures your original PDF remains intact in case you ever need to refer back to it.
- Go to File: In the top menu, click File.
- Select Save a Copy: Choose the Save a Copy option.
- Name the New File: Choose a location (like your Downloads folder) and give the new document a recognizable name (e.g.,
test_document_edited.pdf). - Confirm Save: Click Save.
That’s it! You now have a clean, lean PDF document with all the unnecessary pages excluded, and you didn’t have to pay a penny for the software. You’ll also notice that your new PDF is roughly the same size as the original file, avoiding the annoying file size bloat caused by other methods.
